Third of Employees Use Company Email Inappropriately

PRLog (Press Release)– Apr 22, 2011– As part of ongoing research into the habits of SharePoint users, a SharePoint solutions specialist, http://www.lightningtools.com, conducted research of 1,283 company email users to investigate what they use their work email for.

The study, conducted by http://www.lightningtools.com, initially asked the respondents 'Do you feel that you use your company email inappropriately?' To which almost a third, 32%, answered 'yes.' To look into the matter further, the respondents who answered 'yes' were then asked what they used their email for that they deemed to be 'inappropriate.'

According to the research from http://www.lightningtools.com, more than two fifths, 41%, of the respondents who admitted to using their staff email inappropriately explained that they had used it for sending 'funny images' to colleagues, whilst a further 48% stated that they had used it to 'gossip' with their co-workers.

Furthermore according to http://www.lightningtools.com, over a tenth, 11%, of the respondents who claimed that they had used the staff email system inappropriately admitted to 'flirting' with other employees in some way.

The respondents that were asked what they had done that they deemed to be inappropriate, from a list of multiple answers, were also given the opportunity to select 'other' and specify what they had done. One respondent claimed to have sent 'nude images' of themselves to another employee.

A further 17% of the respondents to the study who admitted to using the company emails inappropriately stated that they had used it to plan 'social arrangements' that would take place outside of the office.  &# best rc helicopter buy sell market place 13;

Brett Lonsdale, co-founder of http://www.lightningtools.com, had the following to say about the study,

"This research was conducted in a bid to further investigate the email habits of email users, in light of the new forum tool that Lightning Tools has released; Social Squared.  It was interesting to see that a third of the respondents admitted they had used the company emails inappropriately.  Although I wouldn't advise using company emails inappropriately, I believe it is acceptable to use it to arrange social events; providing it isn't against company rules regarding emails."

He continued,

"The responses to these questions are one remote control helicopter of many reasons we here at Lightning Tools felt there was the need for a new forum tool on SharePoint. Social Squared allows users to interact with each other and share information. Separate discussions can be made allowing professional and private topics to remain separate."

Features of Social Squared include the ability for SharePoint users to follow other users and tag certain topics that they are interested in. Furthermore, the Social Squared software gives users the opportunity to rate topics, using a five star ranking, allowing others on the forum gage an opinion of the topic being discussed; as well as enables monitoring and admin privileges.
